A Great Cast of Characters
As you know, Splinedoctors are Pixar Animators by day and Teachers by night in SF at the Academy of Art. We have been teaching there for quite a while now. Our students have been doing great and getting jobs at all of the top studios. We are almost done with the semester, so I wanted to showcase some of the students work. This particular assignment is a one person dialog test. The students take the model and work with a line from a movie or tv show. We focus on character, acting, facial animation, polish and so forth. Thank you to Morgan and Leif for creating the new model for this semester.

I don’t know much about how to make CG Films, but I do know while I watched those clips, I could have sworn I was watching “The Incredibles” or the movie or show the dialog came from. It was so fantastic, they nailed the motions and manerisms of a typical person, especially with the eyebrows. I was blown away, all those students deserve at least an A+, otherwise they should quit right now. Seriously, that was awesome!

Wow…The question is: do I give up now or later?

That’s some sweet work right there. The “billy doesn’t feel like talking” and the Swedish aristocrat pieces especially. Well, all of them, actually. The facial animation on those two, though, is truly great.

Really lifelike stuff, filled to the brim with character. I’d be interested to know how many years these students have been studying animation, I’m in my second year of a degree and I haven’t done any dialogue stuff yet (except my own little experimentations.)
My personal favorite is the first one, Life. Has to be the most subtle of all of them, but my god is it effective. There’s times when I ask myself why animation is really superior to traditional filmmaking, and stuff like that, where a human being can create life by volition, it’s pretty awe inspiring. It’s not just storytelling, it’s power.

Cool stuff. I miss San Francisco.
Oliver
Nice ones, but haven’t we had those before?
Jean-Denis Haas
Awesome!!
“I was fun” and “Purgatory Lounge” are especially sweet!
Morgan Loomis
Holy crap, nice work guys!
Great to see so many iterations of Norman, I’m amazed at how creative and versatile you’ve all been with him (or her, apparently).
And the animation is superb. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait to see more.

Well, The reason we put up this site was to give tips and tricks on Animation, so what you ask is a very broad question. My major suggestion is probably to keep it simple at first. Try making characters that are fun to watch.

Those pieces are awesome and really inspires students like myself to keep going. I really like “Purgatory Cafe:” that arm shooting out really adds so much and I found myself watching that part over and over.

Great stuff! I’ve never been able to see tests from the classes before. Cool!
I’m surprised at how many different situations and characters there are. Do the teachers distribute pre-arranged dialogue and characters, or do you and the students come up with them together?
Ian
Id like to say first of all,on behalf of all the students in my class Thank you everyone for the great reponse.these shot are still WIP and need mainly polish.
in regards to your post Jeff Pidgeon, we were given a character “Norman” made by Morgan and Leif, we also have “Hogan” but Norman is new this past semester. we have quite a few different shots a semester and each shot is developed and made by each student over about 3 weeks at most.
We choose a number of dialogues and Mike and Andrew would help us decide. and ofcousre crit our work every week. thanks again guys. you make it worth wild.
