Art Department Roundtable!!!!
We’re proud to announce the next splinecast in our Animation Roundtable series. Andrew and I were very fortunate to gather an amazing group of some of Pixar’s art department A-listers for our Art Department Roundtable. In this podcast we are joined by production designers Harley Jessup and Bob Pauley, director of photography Sharon Calahan, art director Tia Kratter, and character designer Teddy Newton. Andrew and I can’t thank them all enough for their participation. We had a great, anecdotal conversation about the development process from art’s point of view with some of the most talented designers working in animation today. Below is an mp4 and wav file of the recording. Andrew and I will do our best to publish a polished version with recorded wraps and slideshow up on iTunes as soon as we’re able. Till then take a listen to a group of people who have had a hand in creating some of the most stunning visuals in film’s recent history. We hope you enjoy it.

Awesome interviews, always inspire me as I work… I love it when they get into the nuts and bolts… Which leads me to…
It seems that when too many ppl are interviewed at once, there is less delving into detail.
For example: With Brad Bird or Andrews & Newton, we got personal backgrounds, story technique, tips for students, even favorite movies, etc…
But in the last round table, I never felt it got that involved because it was jumping from person to person. And what an amazing group of people, too!
They definetly each deserve individual coverage…
Or in pairs… pairs is acceptable:)
That said, I’ll take what I can get and please, please keep this stuff coming!
It kinda feels like online schooling to me in a sense, from the industry giants, which is such a valuable resource…

Yeah, I agree with above that round -table discussions can be a little too broad but on the other hand they were all inspiring anecdotes from each so it was good in that way too. Just Teddy on his own would be HIGHLY entertaining! I could listen to these fuys talk all day-thanks again for taking the trouble to organize & post these Splinecasts. It really gives an insight into the different depts. @ PIXAR work & inter-relate.
Who’s next? Would be great to hear from Lou Romano or Ricky Nierva.

By the way, I wanted to just take this opportunity to thank Adam Burke. For a while spline doctors was just lagging and he came in and really helped pick things up. He is a TRUE teacher. He has made time to set up these interviews and put together these posts. Adam really cares about education and does not ask for anything in return for the great knowledge he passes on. Thanks again Adam.

Amazing! Thanks for putting this up. I’d love to hear more from the great Harley Jessup, Bob Pauly, and the incredible insights of Sharon Calahan. Her work on nearly all of the Pixar films is astounding. Have you interviewed them individually?

Is it just me or does Teddy Newton’s job sound like the greatest job on Earth…?
Oh and on a technical note, I couldn’t get the mp4 to transfer to my iPod… but I converted to AAC & all was well with the World.

Have you ever thought about doing a film analysis of one of your films? Or sitting down with a director and asking him about the choices that were made about certain scenes?

Great interview guys. Interesting to hear that one person had been at PIXAR ten years and only worked on 2 films. Wow. I thought the usual was about 3 year average per production? Good to know that if you have talent PIXAR will take care of you.
