Fun Micro Expression Test

A while back we had a great Facial Reading expert come to pixar to help us understand more about the face. We learned about something called micro-expression which are expression we make very quickly that can reveal how we are really feeling. It is very useful for people trying to spot lies and so forth. Its also great to try and put into our work, especially the work of a computer animator, who can get lots of subtle stuff into their work.
Here is a Micro Expression Test. Click on the number, then whet micro expression flashes by.

Yes, the micro expression stuff is simply awesome. I see it all the time now, but just can’t connect the dots to a specific emotions very well.
Most people are pretty honest with their facial expression actually, makes it harder for me to observe for concealed emotions.

I think I batted around 700…I’ll blame blinking on one attempt:). What a fun tool. I’m getting pretty good at reading “fleeting” expressions, having been married for 17 years…I’m especially good at spotting anger.

I actually just finished doing a paper for school on facial expressions and I learned about micro expressions and universal facial expressions. It was really interesting stuff, I am glad that I looked into it. Was is Paul Ekman that came in?

Cool! I just heard about this on the RadioLab podcast on “deception”. Paul Ekman was on it talking about micro expressions and this software.

hmmm… most of them just looked like pops. I think the fact that the heads aren’t well aligned, making everything in the image change position, drowns out the sigificant expression detail.
Interesting idea; they should have made their test a bit more carefully to give it a fair shot.
