Lie to Me
There is a new show on Fox called Lie to Me. It is based on the work of Paul Ekman who has given many lectures at Pixar about everything from Micro Expressions to How to Spot a liar. His stuff is amazing. For animators, its pure gold to understand the details that your face gives away during a conversation. I have not watched the show, but i did see the pilot and its pretty good. Take a look. It can’t hurt, especially when you are trying to get the details back into your work.

It’s just called “Lie to Me” here in Australia. I’ve been home sick and am thus watching a lot of tv lately. This show premiere’s on one of the networks next week some time and is getting a lot of plugging. I didn’t know it was an Eckman thing though, might take a peek if I remember.

I’ve been reading books on Body Language and the interesting thing that has been pointed out is the face is the hardest part of the human to read. It’s said that our feet are the most truthful parts of our body since the Limbic side of the brain responds to the feet which gives no time for thought. It’s also said that were taught to lie when we are children since a child will always make a truthful response he is sometimes scolded for it and thats why we lie or have poker faces. Since the face is the hardest part of the body to read theres been alot of innocent people thrown in jail, it’s another reason they talk about getting rid of desks in an interrogation room so that the whole body can be viewed wile questioned. Just interesting things i’ve read.

What a great show!
I felt like smacking myself in the head while watching it because it’s such an obviously great new twist on the crime/drama genre.
Definitely be keeping track of this series

Animator
Hi guys, love & follow the blog regularly.
Does PIXAR even hire animators anymore? The online demoreel system never advertises for them. That system is so distant and cold.
What are the chances of an animator getting hired that didn’t go to CalArts?
Sorry, this is rude & off topic & a little cheap. It seems like PIXAR doesn’t hire animators anymore, and on top of that, doesn’t hire any that didn’t go to CalArts. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

The clips section on Hulu.com has some nice little 30 sec videos focusing on different expressions: contempt, anger, surprise, etc….
I like the show, hopefully Fox will actually stand behind it long enough for it to develop a following.

Have been watching the show of late, and was wondering how much this is actually going to be useful for feature animators, as we are meant to be more clear in our posing, but might be useful for animators working for live action features.

Hey Andrew,
Thanks for the show recommendation. I had heard about it before, and it seemed interesting, but I didn’t realize Paul Ekman was involved. Now I have even more of a reason to check it out.
