Spline Doctors Animation Challenge
I thought it would be fun to put together a little contest of sorts. I’m not sure if anyone has heard this piece of Dialogue:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KUNpsqOgYA
The challenge is to animate part of the flip out that Christian Bale goes on. You can put him on the set of terminator, or batman.. whatever. Come up with a nice little scene. Feel free to bleep out the F-bombs or edit the clip anyway you want. You can pick a small manageable part of the clip to animate. You obviously will not have time to animate the whole thing. Click here for the audio. We will pick the winner and post a bunch of the other contestants work on the site. The winner will receive some pixar swag and possibly something else (ie signed poster or something like that) This piece of dialogue is just too juicy to pass up. Email splinedr@gmail to put a link to your entry. You have until April Fools Day to submit for judging.
Good luck..
Spline Doctors
ps… This contest is for fun and is in no way connected to Pixar. It is meant to be a learning exercise for doing a dialogue scene.
PPS… here is a funny version done on Family Guy… LINK

I may have to pull out the old animation stuff and take a whack at this fun little project. lol
John
I have to do this!!! I haven’t stopped laughing since I heard this clip yesterday.
It is almost 4 minutes though. How long is this contest? When do we have to submit by???
Thanks, you guys are geniuses!
-John
Dr. Gordon
Please note, you dont have to do the whole clip. Just pick a piece of it that you want to do or edit some pieces together. As for when we will Judge, How about April Fools Day.
John
Perfect! I am so excited to do this!
marcelino
This is going to be a fun little project! In addition to the Pixar swag, I think it would be an awesome incentive to have the top winner’s work critiqued by some of you awesome PIXAR guys! See you in April!!!
Blake
Great idea marcelino! Have a crit on the winners work would be awesome!
Joel Stapley
YEAH!! i had this idea the second I heard the clip! Thanks for making t official. Hopefully I have time to do it.
Nate Lane
ha. the stormtrooper. anyhow, swell idea, will definitely give it a swing.
Theresa Adolph
You have to tell Michal Makarewicz that he looks just like Christian Bale. Maybe without the anger issues though. At least I hope so anyway.
Really funny clip by the way. Where the heck do you find that?

Andy Seredy

[...] you, Corey McDaniel, for taking up the challenge put forth over at SplineDoctors.com. The dance mix was great an all, but someone has to put that stupid Christian Bale in his place. [...]
Nelxon
too cool. This can go so many ways. The entries on going to be hilarious. I’m in.
Carlos
This is going to be fun to work on. The only question that remains for me is to swear or not to swear.. I think removing the f bombs kills a lot of the edge in the dialogue? How would you guys feel about showcasing clips that are not censored?
Dr. Gordon
I dont have a problem showing work that has curses. Its really up to you.
-Andrew
Jay
Are you judging this on the animation or the scene? Do you prefer an unrendered dialogue playblast that focuses on animation or a fully rendered non-interactive set around the character that sets the scene?
nick
I have an ass (not donkey) all modeled and rigged and ready to go that has just been waiting for dialouge like this. Gold!
David
Can we use Norman rig for this contest?I am not a student of AAU.But since Pixar classes closed,it relased to public. But i couldn’t find the link now.
Stefano
Haahha, I think that’s an AWESOME idea!!
Is this contest open to anyone?
Teresa
Cool contest! lol, this would be super fun to animate and I love Pixar swag!… I really want to participate and would if I hadn’t just joined Blue Sky during crunch time
I’ll check back to watch the entries though.. Have fun guys! Looking forward to it!
Dr. Gordon
David – You can use whatever rig you want.
Stefano, the contest is open to anyone
Jay – It will be judged on overally entertainment and animation. There may be some consolation prizes…
I only hope that this thing wont be so played out by April 1st… Maybe I’m giving too much time …
-Andrew
jonathan
Sounds like fun! Say, this is not related to this post, but does anyone know where I can find a link to the “Creampuff” AAU project, the one off the blog is broken, unless it was removed for other reasons. I just haven’t seen it in it’s entirety and it had some really cool animation.
Yanir Kleiman
I’m in!
Would you guys be so kind to comment about WIPs (blocking etc) or publish some of them on the blog, or am I pushing my luck here?
Dr. Gordon
Yanir…
It may be difficult to comment on WIP. Maybe we can pick one or two…
-Andrew
Daniel Huertas
“Maybe I’m giving too much time …”
please don’t change the deadline Andrew.. April’s fool day sound like a very decent time to finish an animation that intense and for a competition on this site… considering that some of us don’t have as much free time to work on it as we wish..
Thank all the Splinedoctors for doing this..!
Dave
Christian Bale seems like such a nice young man.
jonathan
ooooh when i see this contest i was so happy and i’m run way to get the when i open up and realize that take 4 minutes i just became sad haha its to long audio to do until april, its to much for me, beginner and for a lot of begginers…
haha i’ll wait more for a contest with less minutes….
good luck for all!
LB
I don’t think anyone is supposed to animate the whole 4 minutes Jonathan, as far as i understood, just pick any part you like and have fun with it.
jonathan
oh i guess i read wrong… now i see what need to do haha really nice i’ll do it!
Daniel Huertas
What about having this piece done in our demoreels or portfolios? it is “acceptable” for the industry if we have strong language on it? or we have to take away the power of the clip by “beeping” the F words?
I would like some thoughts about that
Dr Gordon
Daniel,
I can see your concern about having curse words on a demo reel. You can certainly put a subtitle on the pice for your reel that says “explicit language” or bleep it out. Or you can note on your reel breakdown that it was done for an online animation challenge and that you did not pick the dialogue.
-Andrew

just so we get the story right Christian Bale offered an apology on KROQ radio http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=christian+bale+radio+apology&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Bill O’ Reilly gets down too. There is something always thrilling and exciting about people when they curse, it’s uninhibited, unchecked emotions…gotta love it!
Paul Sinclair
I’m up for this, need to blow out the cobwebs!
matt
IMIN!! Wow its really hard to pick which part of this I wanna animate.
Bruno
wow, what a cool contest and this dialogue is great, just gotta think of something cool to do.
Kyle
Where will we be submitting the movies when they are completed?
Jonah
I wish I could animate right about now.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for this site.
I can’t actually animate yet – I’m learning the basics of modeling, rigging, ect. first so I can have a good foundation.
But when I do start animating, this site will be one of my main references.
Paul Sinclair
Jonah if you want to animate, get a free rig and animate (try 11 second club). You don’t need to learn to model & rig for this. You could spend years learning the technology & processes of modelling & setup (a huge area), rather than the nuances of animation. I speak from experience my friend. Your good foundation for animation is in the “animators survival kit” and “the illusion of life” books.
Nick Gooch
LOL. this is going to be fun to see what people come up with…glad i have until April first, going for a 26 second clip :O
“dd the F* are you doing?!”
jblog
where do we post the final animation?
Comment here with a vimeo link?
Nate Lane
I knew I’d seen something very similar. Ron Zorman http://www.ronzorman.com/Ducktest.avi

The AAU Norman Rig (used in pixar classes) is available to everyone who was looking for it.

Good Luck everyone
Stefano
Hi guys,
In my spare time I (roughly) edited the audio and did a first animation pass.
Before moving on I thought it was a good idea to share it and hopefully get some critiques and feedback, which are always more than welcome.
