Ricky Nierva Spline Cast… Finally!
Sorry it took so long but I was finishing up with the Animation Intern Training program at Pixar. I finally had the time to edit and post this great interview with Ricky Nierva, Production Designer on UP. I hope you enjoy it. Ricky is a really great guy and I learned so much from talking with him. Please send your comments to the site and thanks for all the support.

Thanks Andrew,
These splinecasts you do are always amazing, and please keep them coming as I know there is a wealth of talented people at your hands.
Thanks again for putting the time into making these.

Hm, the direct link to the M4a seems to crash on me. Crashes in Firefox, Opera, IE, and Maxthon. Actually, the when IE crashes, it actually brings down the whole computer to a bsod, Maxthon stays open but just gives an error. The former just crash.
Chrome works a treat though! Thanks!

I love Ricky’s laugh!
Thanks Andrew, wonderful interview as always!

What sort of process was used for making this .m4a? I ask because my Quicktime won’t play it. It can play other mpeg 4 movies but not Spline Doctor movies. Is this some other new codec?

Fantastic interview. I’ve already quoted the ‘yes, and’ when it came up in casual conversaton. thanks!

first off, the m4a file is working fine on Windows with KMPlayer even the pictures show up.
Now, I just listened to it and it looks like I will have to listen to it few more times to fully get all the golden nuggets scattered by Nicky. It is funny I can really relate to his childhood: perforated computer paper, razor blade glasses
Now if I may ask, would it be possible to get a transcript of all the names that were mentionned during the interview so we could do a bit more research on them?
Thanks Andrew and the Spline doctors for one more great interview

Hi there Andrew i love the post and please keep them coming. I have a request for you to interview someone in a smaller boutique type animation studios; it would be great to see how they deal with wearing many hats in the industry. As someone living in the mid west i could really benefit from this and i think your listeners could too.

Great interview again! I’m wondering though is there any link to the character designer Ricky was talking about. The guy he sat beside in junior high. I’m not sure how you spell his name but it’s something like Joe Mojour ? Since Ricky regards him as one of the best in the business today I would love to see some of his work. Thanks

I have listened to this podcast a number of times and absolutely love it! I especially appreciate what he says about your attitude about your own work and also the section about children’s drawings being inspirational.
It’s kind of interesting, but I came across some of my oldest stuff that was saved. It inspired me to do a piece based off of one of my early drawings: http://Snegoalthorp.deviantart.com/art/Kids-Stuff-1-161304780 It was a ton of fun!
Anyways, thanks for doing these podcasts; they’re super amazing!
